Why do the US destabilize small 3rd world countries?

Like Sri Lanka, African countries, South American countries etc.? Why does the US and Europeans want to destabilize poor 3rd world countries and don't let them develop freely? Why do they create problems in these countries? Are the US and the Europeans afraid the they will rise above them technologically and beat them?
