Temperature for a new fresh water aquarium?

We just got a 30 gallon fresh water aquarium and set it up about 4 hours ago. We are hoping to get the temperature (among the chemicals but we are on the right track regarding that) correct by tomorrow to get our first fish. The tank came with a regent strip thermometer, which we placed on the left outside wall of the tank. So far, nothing is illuminating, and it was even working when we had it simply sitting on our table. I used a human thermometer, just to see what it would say! And it read 95 degrees, is it possible that the stick thermometer would not show up because it only goes up to 88 degrees, or are human thermometers just a horrible guide to go off of? Any tips are appreciated, we want to get our tank perfect and ensure our temp is where is needs to be!
