Help, i forgot the name of this book, description inside?

I remember reading a book in high school about a family around 1960's or so. basically the husband is killed being involved with attempting to help a black youth so in retaliation the villagers lynch the youth. the family is left without a way of making money so the mother starts to work on her farm alone, eventually a black man comes to help with her farm and the farm gets hit by a tornado. I forget the most of the story but thats all I remember. please let me know the name of this story
